PROGRAM OF STUDY
|
Critical Thinking Humanities: All classes focus on developing critical thinking and the core learning skills of close reading, essay writing, and discussion. Skills are taught through work in literature, such a reading a novel, or exploring topics in history or social studies. Several classes are offered; see below.

2021 - 2022 COURSES

Critical Thinking Humanities Yearlong Course [in 4 Parts, full-year]
This is a full-time course combining language arts and social studies instruction into one block of time. Class is two hours per day, four days a week, for a 36-week year. It provides the same level of instruction given at leading private schools and gives time for close individual work and dramatic growth in the core learning skills. |

Critical Thinking English: The Analytical Essay Writing Process [9 week Semester]
Through close study of a novel, you will learn a complete method of analysis for success in high school, college, and beyond. Provides clear steps from reading to conduct analysis, finding ideas, and teaching your ideas in an analytical essay. Two classes a week for a nine-week semester. |

Introduction to Critical Thinking [3 week short course or a 9 week semester]
Learn the basics of the Paul-Elder model for critical thinking to transform your learning. Taught in both a focused short course (3 classes a week for 3 weeks) or a semester course (1 class a week for 9 weeks). |

What is Critical Thinking? [1 week short course]
A brief introduction to the heart of the Paul-Elder model for critical thinking to spark your interest for further study. Three classes in one week. |

If you have a group of learners with specific goals in the humanities, I am happy to discuss your ideas and create a class tailored to your objectives. |

TEACHING
CREDENTIAL |
I have a lifetime teaching credential in social studies for grades 7-12 from the state of Massachusetts. Although I worked for years as an independent school teacher in California, I did not require and do not have a California state teaching credential.

SCHOOL LAWS |
You are responsible for knowing your state’s home school laws and completing all paper work requirements. If so desired, I will provide a written report of your child’s progress in my class.
